Across debt relief, mortgage, and hospitality, Conduit's AI agents have handled tens of thousands of conversations with real prospects and guests. We went back through 50,000 of them to understand what actually separates a conversation that converts from one that doesn't.
Some of what we found confirmed what we expected. Some of it surprised us. Here's what the data shows.

The short version: The gap between average and top-performing operations almost never comes down to better salespeople, better products, or better pricing. It comes down to speed, persistence, and whether the conversation adapts to the prospect or forces the prospect to adapt to it.

Finding 1: The First 60 Seconds Determine Everything
The most reliable predictor of conversation success isn't the quality of the script, the sophistication of the AI, or the complexity of the offer. It's time-to-first-contact.
Conversations that started within 60 seconds of lead submission converted at 4.2x the rate of conversations that started after 30 minutes. After two hours, conversion rates dropped to statistically negligible levels.
The pattern held across every vertical we analyzed:
- A debt relief consumer submitting a form at 10 PM
- A borrower requesting a mortgage rate quote on Saturday morning
- A hotel guest asking about suite availability at 9 PM
All of them were dramatically more likely to convert when the response was immediate.
Why Speed Matters More Than Script Quality
This isn't about AI. It's about human behavior. When someone submits a lead form, they are in a decision window. That window is short, and it closes fast. Research into consumer decision-making consistently shows that intent is highest at the moment of action, and that competing offers, distractions, and second thoughts erode it quickly.
The operation that responds first doesn't just get the first conversation. In most cases, it gets the only conversation. The decision window belongs to whoever shows up first, and no amount of script optimization recovers a lead that already moved on.
Finding 2: Attempt #2 Is Where Most Companies Stop — and Most Revenue Is Lost
We looked at contact data across lead pools handled before and after Conduit deployment. The pattern was consistent: traditional operations make one to two contact attempts on most leads and move on.
That's a significant revenue leak.

The "Hard to Reach" Lead Is Not a Bad Lead
The consumers who took multiple touches weren't less valuable. In many cases, they were more considered buyers who took longer to engage but converted at comparable rates once reached.
Debt relief clients who enrolled after four attempts carried similar average enrolled debt to those who enrolled on the first call. The lead quality was the same. The difference was purely operational: one group had an operation willing to keep calling.
The problem isn't lead quality. It's persistence. Most operations stop calling before the answer comes, not because the lead is bad, but because consistent multi-attempt follow-up is operationally difficult to sustain with human teams. It requires scheduling, tracking, and the discipline to keep working a lead that hasn't responded yet. Those are exactly the conditions where human operations tend to deprioritize and move on.

Finding 3: After-Hours Conversations Close at Higher Rates
This one surprised us. We expected after-hours leads to be lower quality: impulsive submissions, less considered decisions, weaker intent. The data showed the opposite.
After-hours leads submitted between 6 PM and 9 AM, or on weekends, that were reached immediately converted at rates 15 to 28% higher than daytime leads across debt relief and mortgage segments.
Why After-Hours Intent Is Stronger, Not Weaker
The explanation, once examined, makes sense. People who research debt settlement options at 11 PM on a Tuesday have had time to think. They're not at work, not distracted by meetings, and have often spent hours reviewing their financial situation before submitting a form. The intent is serious. The decision is considered. They just need someone to answer.
This is a fundamentally different psychological profile than the midday lead who submitted a form between calls. The after-hours submitter has done the research. They've reached a decision point. What they're waiting for is a response.
The hospitality data showed a different version of the same pattern:
After-hours service requests resolved immediately generated significantly higher post-stay satisfaction scores than identical requests handled the next morning.
The common thread across both segments: immediacy at the moment of need is worth more than the same resolution delivered hours later. The value of the response decays fast. For operations that can only respond during business hours, a large share of their highest-intent leads are being handled at the worst possible time.
Finding 4: The Words Don't Matter as Much as the Pace
One of the most counterintuitive findings in the dataset: we tested dozens of script variations across qualification flows, covering different opening lines, different qualification question orders, and different tone settings. The variation in conversion rates across scripts was smaller than expected.
What mattered significantly more was conversational pacing.
What "Pacing" Actually Means in Practice
Pacing refers to how the agent moves through a qualification conversation in response to the prospect's real-time behavior. Specifically:
- Slowing down when confusion or hesitation is detected (longer pauses, repeated questions, short or unclear answers)
- Accelerating when the prospect is engaged and responsive
- Treating the conversation as a dialogue rather than a checklist to complete
Conversations where the agent adapted dynamically to the prospect's pace outperformed scripted, linear conversations by 22% on qualification completion rate.
This is where the role of a skilled conversation engineer becomes visible. The best-performing agents weren't executing a fixed script faster or more accurately. They were reading the conversation and adjusting in real time, the same thing a skilled human rep does intuitively, but applied consistently across every interaction. The lesson is direct: the best conversation is the one that feels least scripted. Prospects don't object to being qualified. They object to feeling processed. The difference between those two experiences is almost entirely a function of pacing, not content.
Finding 5: The Follow-Up Window Is Longer Than Most Teams Think
Industry convention in debt relief and mortgage says you have three to five days to work a lead before it goes cold. Our data says the window is longer when the follow-up is structured.
Leads that entered a 30-day nurture sequence with calibrated follow-up, not daily blasts but contact attempts matched to behavior signals, converted at meaningful rates through day 21. After day 21, conversion rates dropped sharply.
What "Structured" Follow-Up Actually Looks Like
The key distinction in the data isn't the length of the nurture window. It's the calibration. Leads that received generic daily outreach showed diminishing returns quickly. Leads where follow-up intensity was adjusted based on engagement signals (opens, responses, partial completions) held conversion rates significantly longer.
The practical implication breaks down into three stages:
- Days 1-5: High-frequency contact attempts, maximum urgency, rapid response to any engagement signal
- Days 6-14: Moderate cadence, content-driven touches that add value rather than just re-requesting contact
- Days 15-21: Low-frequency, behavior-triggered only; contact when a signal appears, not on a fixed schedule
A three-week structured nurture window with follow-up intensity matched to prospect engagement recovers significant revenue that would otherwise be written off after the standard three-to-five-day push. For most operations, that written-off revenue isn't a small number.

The 50,000 conversations in this dataset were handled by AI agents. The operations that saw the results above didn't build larger headcounts to achieve them.
